This week on Zero Dark Nerdy: Whalefall and the Emotional Range of an Animal Survival Flick.
Father-daughter duo Brian and Jordan discuss Whalefall, the face-value survival thriller of the season, deceptively FULL to the brim with heart and harrowing family-driven themes. Brian Duffield directs star on the rise Austin Abrams and undeniable heater Josh Brolin in this father-son film adaptation of the 2013 award-winning novel written by Daniel Kraus.
How does Whalefall set itself apart from others in its suspense-heavy subgenre such as Jaws, Pirhanna, that one episode of Creepshow? You’ll be teary by the time you find out.
Practical squid puppets! A claustrophobic bioluminescent whale stomach! Austin Abrams iconic scream! Josh Brolin’s full nautical back tattoo! The BEAUTY and CINEMA of the deep sea on the big screen.
This one is a heart-pounding visual spectacle worth the outing, and may even spur a beautiful and much-needed conversation between parent and child by the end of it!
